Inside Dubai Design Week

Highlights from Downtown Design and d3

Downtown Design – Where Global Brands and Ideas Converge

During Dubai Design Week, Downtown Design becomes the core of the entire festival, a temporary pavilion constructed exclusively for this event. Visitors often refer to it simply as “the tent,” yet its impact is far from temporary. The pavilion hosts an impressive mix of international brands, design studios, and new product launches. It is recognized as one of the most important design fairs in the Middle East, not only because of its scale but because of the quality of the conversations it encourages around contemporary design.

Located on the waterfront edge of the Dubai Design District (d3), the pavilion transforms into a dynamic meeting point for designers, architects, and innovators. Electric buggies take visitors from various points in the district to the pavilion, reinforcing the impression of a temporary micro-city created solely for design. A space built for discovery, collaboration, and meaningful connections. Truly a place that makes design feel alive.

Dubai Design District (d3) – A Growing Creative Ecosystem

Dubai Design District (d3) is not just a venue, it is the beating heart of Dubai’s creative culture. With design studios, emerging brands, art galleries, and design-focused businesses side by side, d3 offers a rare ecosystem where creativity and commerce coexist. Even outside Dubai Design Week, the district hosts year-round exhibitions, installations, and events, positioning itself as a regional hub for innovation and cross-disciplinary design.

Visiting d3 for the first time showed how fast this ecosystem is evolving. The energy is global, yet the creative expression feels local and grounded. Something unique is happening here, a community that is shaping the future of design in the Middle East. Definitely a place worth seeing, experiencing, and returning to.

Nation by Design: Insights from Singapore Design Week

How Singapore builds identity and progress through design

This September, Singapore hosted the vibrant Singapore Design Week 2025 from 11 to 21 September, marking 60 years of nationhood with the theme “Nation by Design”. Across four dynamic design districts—Bras Basah-Bugis, Marina, Orchard and the newly added Singapore Science Park—this city-wide celebration showcased how design has been central to Singapore’s transformation into a liveable, innovative and loveable nation. Our team at Formeta Design was thrilled to experience firsthand this immersive exploration of creativity, culture and future-thinking design.

Building on that energy, we had the privilege to attend the inaugural World Design Business Forum, invited by the Design Business Chamber Singapore, the DesignSingapore Council and the iSee Taiwan Foundation. The forum gathered global leaders and thought-provokers to explore how design and business are converging in new ways, offering deep insight and rich inspiration. At Formeta Design we found the conversations truly energising, reinforcing our commitment to design-led innovation on an international scale.

Our participation in these landmark events has provided a refreshed perspective for Formeta Design. Engaging with Singapore’s design ecosystem, meeting local and global practitioners, and witnessing how a city positions design as a key strategic asset has enriched our vision. We are excited to channel this experience into our work—continuing to serve our B2B clients with a globally-aware, design-forward approach and strengthening our ambition to operate at the forefront of service and product innovation.

Every Form, a Letter. Every Product, a Word.

Designing Our Visual Language: The Formeta Identity System

We’ve always seen design not just as problem-solving, but as a language—a way to connect people, technology, and ideas. As Formeta Design expanded across industries and disciplines—from physical products to digital platforms, from user interfaces to editorial publishing—we realized that our own identity needed to evolve too.

This is the story of why we rebuilt our visual identity from the ground up, how a single phrase—“Every form, a letter. Every product, a word.”—became our compass, and how we turned complexity into a living, visual dialogue.

From Fragmented Symbols to a Unified System

In the past, our identity relied on traditional elements—logos, color schemes, visual devices. But as our portfolio grew more diverse, these tools began to feel limiting. We needed a system that could speak across mediums, disciplines, and audiences without losing coherence. It wasn’t just a matter of rebranding—it was about designing a language that could hold everything together.

A Language Born from Design

The phrase “Every form, a letter. Every product, a word.” became the foundation of this transformation. It reflects our belief that design elements carry semantic weight. Each icon, each interface, each product we create functions like a letter in the broader narrative of what Formeta stands for. This way of thinking led us to develop a flexible, modular system grounded in intentional form-making.

A Living and Modular Framework

At the heart of our new identity lies a custom-built iconography grid. This grid isn’t decorative—it’s linguistic. Each symbol represents a core idea, a service, or a way of thinking. The system adapts to different formats and contexts: on our website, in presentations, in print materials, and even in our internal tools.

We moved away from a static brand and instead embraced a living framework—one that grows with our team and transforms with every new project.

Extending the Identity Across Mediums

Our website now acts as an interactive layer of the identity, where iconography and structure guide navigation and content. The same goes for our newly launched design magazine, which serves as both a curated editorial platform and an extension of our voice.

By unifying digital, physical, and print experiences, we created a brand that speaks consistently, yet never monotonously.

A System That Can Grow with Us

This new identity doesn’t just reflect what we do—it reflects how we think. It allows for growth, reinterpretation, and evolution. In a world where design is increasingly multidisciplinary, we needed a system that wasn’t just visually coherent but conceptually solid.

And more importantly, it allows us to build new words, new sentences—new ways to connect with the world around us.

If you’re rethinking your identity or building one from scratch, we hope our journey offers some perspective. In the end, identity isn’t just about appearance—it’s about intention, clarity, and the courage to speak your own language.

Open for Collaborations in Sales

Carryfix: Portable Handle for Comfortable Carrying

At times, we find ourselves wondering about the market response to the projects we create. We, too, have produced, packaged, and made our award-winning product, Carryfix, ready for sale entirely through our own resources. The more we immerse ourselves in something, the more we internalize it — this much is clear. However, it’s important not to mistake the stories created as marketing collateral for the truth. The idea of a designer having an “Eureka” moment, like Archimedes in the bath or Newton with the apple, and instantly sketching an iconic design is a misconception. I believe this misperception is also linked to a certain detachment from design theory. One of the most cherished aspects of design, in our view, is iteration. Additionally, when you are providing a service, the first thing you must do is understand your boundaries (design brief), try to comprehend your playing field (point of differentiation), make negotiations at every subtle decision (trade-offs), and aim for the most accurate result in that context. Hands-on experience is crucial in the long process of developing a new product.

From the very beginning, Carryfix has had a provocative stance. You won’t find it easily in offline stores — you can either purchase it from museum shops or receive it as a gift from us. We wanted to blend culture with mass production design, merging them in the same pot. The product is both usable and designed to provoke curiosity about its manufacturing process. It is ergonomic, yet we deliberately did not make the handle opening wider to heighten the sense of curiosity. A trade-off.

Why Should You Use Carryfix?

The handle design of most everyday bags is not ergonomically suited to the natural structure of the hand, particularly when carrying heavy or long-term loads. This can lead to posture issues and discomfort in the wrists and fingers. During use, the thumbs and little fingers are often pinched, making them more susceptible to pressure. Carryfix, designed by Formeta Design, addresses these challenges by considering the flexor muscles of the fingers and the structure of the wrist, making carrying a bag more comfortable and ergonomic.

Usage Areas

Carryfix is designed to offer users a convenient and ergonomic solution for carrying various items, making it suitable for a wide range of activities. It can be used for shopping, picnics, the beach, sports, travel, and carrying baby items.
Among its many features, three stand out as particularly important. First, Carryfix helps secure bag handles together during long-term transport, such as short trips, preventing them from separating when the bags are placed on the ground, ensuring a safer and more comfortable experience. Second, it allows multiple bags to be connected, enabling users to carry more than one bag at once, as if they were a single bag—ideal for activities such as sports or carrying baby items. Finally, and most importantly, Carryfix supports hand health and protects the flexor muscles while carrying heavy or immediate loads.

Collaboration Opportunities

We do not engage in individual sales for Carryfix, as it is a labor-intensive operation. However, we are open to partnerships with various institutions and businesses. If you are interested in offering Carryfix in museum shops, cultural events, or design-focused stores, we would be thrilled to explore potential collaboration opportunities. Whether you are looking to incorporate Carryfix into your product offerings or want to feature it in a special event or exhibition, we are more than happy to discuss further and make it happen.

We believe that Carryfix offers a unique value proposition for those seeking innovative, ergonomic, and culturally inspired designs. Let’s work together to bring this product to new audiences and environments.

Panel on "Design for Industry 4.0"

with the Turkish Design Foundation

We recently had the honor of participating in a panel titled “Design for Industry 4.0,” organized by the Turkish Design Foundation. During this event, we shared our expertise and years of experience in the field of design. Drawing from our extensive work in industrial design, we discussed both our challenges and insights, offering a unique perspective on how design has evolved in the context of Industry 4.0.

Our presentation focused on the evolution of industrial design, emphasizing that today’s products are not merely about hardware and three-dimensional structures. Instead, we highlighted how products have become more holistic and comprehensive, incorporating interfaces and complementary elements that enhance user experience. We discussed how this integrated approach represents a new and complex frontier in design, which requires a deeper understanding of various interrelated components.

Through the projects we have undertaken, we demonstrated how this broader perspective on design is being applied in real-world scenarios, with the aim of contributing to the ongoing transformation in industrial design. We believe that the future of design lies in its ability to seamlessly integrate technology, functionality, and user-centric elements to create more intuitive and sustainable solutions.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Turkish Design Foundation for the invitation and to all the participants for their valuable engagement and insights. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and further advancing the role of design in shaping the future of Industry 4.0
